History of The Advitech Group

The Advitech Group was born out of Advitech Pty Limited, an engineering consulting company which began as a division of Varley Engineering in Newcastle NSW Australia. It was incorporated as a separate company in January 1988.

Initially servicing heavy industry in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, Advitech continued to grow and its capabilities gradually expanded to include a wide range of engineering services, project management, environmental services and software development.

Through innovation, organic growth and acquisition, the original consulting business evolved into The Advitech Group in 2009. The Advitech Group was established as an overarching STEM&M® (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Manufacturing) organisation with a growing number of member companies who work both independently and in collaboration with each other. While member companies each continue to operate as separate entities, all member companies work within a consistent framework in the STEM&M space.

Read more about our history in the timeline below.

The Advitech Group’s vision for growth is ongoing – we strive for innovation and organic growth within each member company, and continue to seek potential new members offering niche solutions with a strong STEM&M focus.

The Advitech Group – making Australia the smarter country through STEM&M.

The Advitech Group, celebrating 30 years of Christmas cheer

Innovators and Pioneers who have inspired us over the past 30 years

Since day one, Advitech and the other specialised companies who come together to form The Advitech Group, have been inspired by the Innovators and Pioneers who shaped our world.

We aspire to lead the way in STEM&M – science, technology mathematics and manufacturing – providing the foundations for innovation. The Advitech Group believes we can go beyond technical excellence to explore new and better ways, much like the Innovators and Pioneers of our past.

These include:

Johannes Gutenbery (1395 – 1468)

The Gutenberg Press is considered to be one of the most significant inventions in the history of the world. The technology changed the world of printing and had a profound impact on the spread of philosophy and popularisation of typography.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519)

Da Vinci was one of the world’s greatest thinkers, artists and philosophers. He was a visionary in several fields including science, engineering, mathematics and arts. His designs were innovative and centuries ahead of their time. Da Vinci conceptualised many inventions through his paintings including the hydraulic machine, boat and the designs of bridges, war machines, buildings and a flying machine.

Sir Isaac Newton (1642 – 1727)

Newton was one of the greatest and most influential scientists of all time, known for his outstanding contributions to mathematics, physics and optics. He invented calculus and formulated the three laws of motion and the universal theory of gravitation.

Benjamin Franklin (1706 – 1790)

Franklin was a scientist, inventor, printer, philosopher, musician, economist and statesman. He was recognised as one of America’s founding fathers. As an inventor, Franklin was responsible for many breakthroughs and inventions in a number of fields including the Franklin Stove, the glass harmonica, the refrigerator, bifocal glasses and the current day urinary catheter. Franklin is most renowned for his experimentations with electricity and the lightning rod.

James Watt (1736 – 1819)

James Watt was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer, renowned for his improvements of the steam engine. Assigned the task of repairing a Newcomen engine, Watt acknowledged it was the best steam engine of its time, but deemed it inefficient and commenced improving the design. Watt’s engine soon became the dominant design for all modern steam engines and helped bring about the Industrial Revolution.

Joseph Michel Montgolfier (1740 – 1810) & Jacques Etienne Montgolfier (1745 – 1799)

Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier were the inventors of the Montgolfiere-style hot air balloon, globe aerostatique. The brothers succeeded in launching the first manned ascent, carrying Etienne into the sky.

Charles Babbage (1791 – 1871) & Ada Lovelace (1815 – 1852)

Babbage and Lovelace were pioneers in computing. Babbage drew up designs for the first general purpose computer, named the Analytic Engine, and Lovelace realised the engine could represent not just numbers, but generic entities like words and music. Many considered Ada Lovelace as the world’s first computer programmer and a visionary of the computing age.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806 – 1859)

Brunel was one of the greatest engineers who ever lived. During his life he accomplished many engineering firsts, including the first tunnel underwater and the first underwater railway. He also built some of the world’s greatest bridges, ships, railways and tunnels and contributed solutions to problems previously unsolvable.

Alexander Graham Bell (1847 – 1922)

Bell was a scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator, credited with inventing the first practical telephone. Whilst the sound powered telephone was developed by accident, engineers at The Bell Telephone Company brought about numerous improvements to the telephone making it one of the most successful products ever.

Guglielmo Marconi (1847 – 1937)

Marconi was an inventor, known for his pioneering work on long distance radio transmission (wireless telegraphy) and for his development of Marconi’s Law. His first radio signal was sent in 1895, and the first successful transatlantic radiotelegraph message was received in 1902. Marconi became instantly famous.

Marie Curie (1867 – 1934)

Marie Curie was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize, and the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes in her lifetime in the diverse fields of chemistry and physics. She was a great scientist who discovered two elements, Polonium and Radium. Curie is notable for her theory of radioactivity and techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes.

Tim Berners-Lee (1955 – )

Berners-Lee, a computer scientist, is famously known as the inventor of the World Wide Web. Understanding the potential of millions of computers connected together through the internet, he specified three fundamental technologies that remain the foundation of today’s web – HTML, URL and HTTP. The world wide web was invented in 1989 and since then, has changed the world, becoming the most powerful communication medium the world has even known.
