We talked to Mike Taylor, our Lead Risk and Functional Safety Engineer about a typical day at Advitech.
Functional safety? Most people would rather go to the dentist than involve themselves in functional safety. What is functional safety? It’s where safety depends on a system or equipment operating correctly in response to its inputs.
That visit to the dentist is still looking good. But at Advitech, we think we can do better. We pride ourselves in being able to work with people to understand their needs and outline a course of action that is straightforward and understandable. When this happens, it’s not just a good day, it’s a great day in the life of a functional safety engineer. And we do have many great days. To help people see a clear way forward is one of our biggest motivators.
But wait – there’s more! Our engineers get to meet all sorts of people, with all sorts of systems in all sorts of industries. We are able to see similarities across industries, and bring those experiences to the cases at hand. Rarely are two jobs alike, and new experiences are gained every day. Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
Advitech Functional Safety Engineers have worked with people in mining, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, power generation, gas powered vehicles, renewable energy, railways, shipping terminals, gas, water and electricity utilities. Every day is a good day, and some are especially good when we see that we have been able to help people in meeting their goals.
In most cases, a customer will get to deal with the same Advitech person from the start to the finish of the job, so there is a strong commitment from Advitech to provide the best outcome possible. Our biggest measure of success is to be invited back on another job. Another great day in the life of a functional safety engineer!
