Project examples

Controlling Workplace Noise at a Coal Preparation Plant

Advitech's acoustics specialists and structural engineers worked together to solve a noise issue at our client's Coal Preparation Plant. After a detailed acoustics assessment of a noisy vacuum pump, the team used Finite Element Analysis to model the pump's existing polyethylene exhaust system and design a replacement steel exhaust that successfully reduced noise emissions by around 8 decibels. Radio Frequency RF Propagation Survey identifies dead spots

To identify the factors causing performance issues of the wireless mesh network, Acubis conducted a radio frequency (RF) propagation survey. Analysis from the site survey revealed multiple causes contributing to dead spots and shadowing which resulted in loss of data and voice connectivity in specific site locations. Read more...

Simulation modelling of new manufacturing facility for CSR Hebel

SMS worked collaboratively with CSR Hebel to simulate the proposed design of their new manufacturing facility. Using Arena simulation software, SMS produced a simulation model which clearly demonstrated that the proposed design could not meet the production requirements. Read more...

Safety Integrity Level (SIL) determination for mine safety

Advitech's functional safety engineers assisted a coal mine operator to determine the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requirements for their safety systems. Their key concern was the risk of gas explosion during operation in care and maintenance mode, and the threat posed to a crew that entered the mine after periods of inactivity. Read more...

Simulation modelling of coal stockpiling and logistics for BHP

SMS developed a simulation model of BHP Illawarra Coal's complex raw coal transportation system, to help address challenges related to bottlenecks and inadequate storage. Through its model, SMS was able to recommend relatively minor infrastructure upgrades, allowing BHP to avoid the need for anticipated new stockpiles or other major investment. The model was then available for ongoing use, to support decision making for other proposed projects and upgrades. Read more...

Optimising pit-to-port logistics

SMS was engaged to review supply chain logistics for a new mining project which planned to extract more than six million tonnes run-of-mine per year for the thermal coal export market. After developing the modelling system and simulating a wide range of scenarios, SMS was able to provide feedback on a number of issues within the proposed supply chain. This equipped their client with the decision making knowledge they needed to ensure their proposed infrastructure was appropriately sized so target throughput levels could be achieved. Read more...

Design of a new turntable roller support

Advitech assisted a locomotive manufacturer to design a new roller support for a rail turntable - replacing a cast roller support housing which had failed after many years of service. Our engineering and drafting team designed the new roller support after building a finite element analysis (FEA) model of the original unit to ensure the new design had improved load-bearing capacity. Hushpak designed and built a custom Acoustic Treatment System to attenuate noise levels from a Bradford Breaker. The solution incorporated Hushclad acoustic cladding, and achieved a 10dB(A) reduction in noise levels. Read more...

Certification of highly complex structures

Advitech's structural engineers applied their highly specialised skills in structural dynamics and vibration modelling to analyse and provide certification for proposed modifications to existing structural steelwork in a coal washery. The steelwork was being modified to support a new vibratory screen, feed chute and discharge chute. Our client proceeded with their modifications with confidence, knowing that all structural changes were certified - avoiding risk and optimising future productivity. Read more...

Advitech's environmental team provided an independent evaluation of water treatment system options for a new purpose-built dairy processing facility. The environmental, technical and financial aspects of each proposed system were assessed, leading to the recommendation of the most effective and efficient solution. This allowed the client to make an educated decision on which system and supplier to proceed with into construction.Read more...

Structural asset protection of ageing infrastructure

Advitech's structural engineers systematically evaluated ageing conveyor and building structures at a coal handling facility to confirm if it would continue to operate safely and economically for the planned life of the plant. Where problems such as significant corrosion were identified, Advitech designed the steelwork modifications required to ensure long-term life, and provided regular site inspection and assistance with site rectifications. A regime of inspections and monitoring is ongoing, to protect asset value and operational integrity. Read more...

Process safety audits of water processing facilities

Advitech's process engineers conducted process safety audits across 16 water-processing, filtration and wastewater treatment facilities spanning a large geographic region, for a major water utility provider. Advitech produced a series of concise reports with practical and actionable recommendations. This provided the water utility with a greater understanding of process safety across its plants, and allowed them to identify safety concerns and opportunities for improvement, and ultimately protect their personnel, assets and the environment. Construction noise impact assessment

Advitech’s environmental team was engaged as part of a 40-kilometre expressway construction project to quantify noise impacts associated with a proposed new haulage route. The new haulage route was not included in the original Construction Noise and Vibration Management Plan (CNVMP), so the modification needed to be justified to authorities. Advitech devised a methodology to demonstrate the compliance of the proposed route within a very quick timeframe, without the need for time consuming and costly background monitoring - saving the client valuable time and money. Hazardous area classification on-board drilling rig

Advitech's experienced process engineers completed a Hazardous Area Classification of the Stena Clyde drilling rig. Over several days on a site visit in Singapore, we inspected 50 hazardous zones onboard, then used the information obtained to complete an assessment against four agreed core standards - one Australian, one international and two industry standards. Advitech prepared a report with recommended actions, which has become a critical reference document for Stena Drilling to ensure all electrical equipment specified and used within the hazardous areas are suitable - essential to safety on board the vessel. Increased recovery of saleable coal at a coal preparation plant

Advitech's engineering team assisted a coal-handling and preparation plant with modifications to their existing plant to reduce the loss of fine coal saleable product to tailings. Advitech prepared the engineering design, drafting and construction documentation, then managed equipment procurement, fabrication and construction to ensure the project was completed on time and on budget. The cost of the plant modification was repaid within six months from the increase in saleable product and reduction in tailings disposal costs. Read more...

Optimising energy and dollar savings through measurement and verification

Advitech's sustainability team assisted BE Campbell to apply for an AusIndustry grant under the Clean Technology Investment Program (CTIP). The application involved a technical study of the proposed replacement of an electric steam boiler, plus an evaluation of energy-saving opportunities for refrigeration and lighting at their pork-boning operation. Following success in gaining CTIP funding, Advitech analysed energy consumption and production volumes before and after project implementation and completed a measurement and verification (M&V) report to prove to AusIndustry that the projects had achieved targeted energy savings. As a result of the project, BE Campbell has increased efficiency, reduced energy costs and improved its environmental credentials in the marketplace by reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated as part of the pork-production process. Heritage management for Hunter Expressway

Advitech managed all aspects of Aboriginal and historic heritage management for a $1.7 billion expressway construction project. The area around the expressway has great cultural significance to the Aboriginal community. Advitech's environment team completed numerous due diligence surveys, cultural heritage assessments, Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) applications and heritage audits, and successfully engaged numerous Aboriginal groups to facilitate the discovery of thousands of culturally significant artefacts. Salvage was carried out within the NSW legislative framework, and the project ran efficiently, within budget, and was completed to the satisfaction of all stakeholders. The key success was achieving the right balance – between respect for Aboriginal heritage and the complex requirements of a major road construction project. Read more...

Air quality assessment for foundry design and construct project

Advitech assisted a South Australian foundry with its Odour Environmental Improvement Program, which involved the design and construction of an improved fume-extraction system to collect odorous fume and disperse it via a new stack. Advitech provided an expert evaluation of the air quality aspects of the project, ensuring that odours generated by the site’s manufacturing processes would be effectively captured and suitably dispersed via the stack. Reducing noise at a conveyor head chute with a custom noise curtain

Our Hushpak Engineering team designed, manufactured and installed noise curtains for a coal conveyor head chute, achieving noise reduction in excess of 12db(A) and decreasing the site's overall noise footprint. This lead to a reduction in noise complaints and noise level exceedences. Read more...
